Into the water

Dunn’s River, the Blue Hole, or a raft on the Martha Brae. Pick your river.

The best Jamaican days are freshwater. Four kinds of river morning, what each costs to join, and which coast it leaves from.

Pick a coast

Six coasts, and the day out that makes each one worth the drive.

The airport town with rafting rivers behind it, the falls coast, seven miles of sand, a lagoon that glows, crocodile country, and the capital under the Blue Mountains.

Out on the water

Between the Negril cliffs and the Montego Bay reef, the good days are afloat.

Catamarans leaving Montego Bay with the bar open and a snorkel stop on the reef, the sunset run down to Rick’s Cafe for the cliff divers, a glass-bottom boat over Booby Cay. Salt water is the other half of this island.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 1,959 travellers on the parish’s most-booked day

Most people land here and most people never leave the strip. Twenty minutes inland the Great River runs through bamboo; ninety minutes east the falls start. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the parish.

The morning

A bamboo raft on the Great River

2–3h· from $20· picked up at the hotel

A captain poles you down through the bamboo while nothing at all happens, which is the point. Most trips tie up at a landing where the limestone foot massage is waiting.

The day east

Dunn’s River, and the drive along the coast

6–8h· from $35· slot-timed entry

Ninety minutes along the north coast to the terraces, where a guide takes the first hand and the whole line follows it up. Take the earliest slot on a ship day.

The evening west

Rick’s Cafe, and the run back after dark

5–7h· from $70· sunset

An hour and a half to Negril for the cliff divers, a drink while the sun drops behind the boats, then the ride home. Worth doing once, and only with a driver.

Negril

Negril is seven miles of sand at one end and a diving board at the other.

The beach runs flat and shallow the whole way north, which is why the horses swim there. South of the roundabout the sand stops and the limestone starts: caves, ladders into the water, and a cliff everybody jumps off at six.

What it costs

The real price of a Jamaican day out.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Some of the best mornings here cost less than the taxi to the beach.

Under $50

Bamboo rafts, limestone massages, the hip strip, and a falls ticket without the minibus.

$150 and up

Private drivers, the full south-coast run, and the once-a-trip adventure passes.

Only in Jamaica

Three Jamaican days you cannot have anywhere else.

Waterfalls and beach clubs exist all over the Caribbean. Water that lights up when you move through it, a village at the top of a hill with a stone pillow in it, and a massage given on a rock in a river do not.

After dark

The Luminous Lagoon

At Glistening Waters near Falmouth, fresh water off the Martha Brae meets the sea in a warm, shallow basin, and the organisms living in it flare where the water is disturbed. Boats go out after sunset and you get in. The glow is real but faint, so a bright moon, or a boatful of phone torches, ruins it for everybody.

Up in the hills

Nine Mile

Two hours up from the coast road, in the hills of Saint Ann, sits the village where Bob Marley was born and where he is buried. The house is tiny, the mausoleum stands behind it, and the guides are family or near enough. Nothing about the day is polished, which is most of why the people who go rate it the way they do.

On the river bank

The limestone massage

At the rafting landings on the Great River and the Lethe, the rafts tie up and a masseuse works on your feet with warm limestone lifted out of the riverbed. It began as something captains added to the trip and it is now the reason plenty of people book the raft at all. An hour, on a rock, in a river.

Book ahead

Four things here that are decided before you land.

Most of this island can be arranged from a beach bar the night before. These four run on timed entry, a boat that only goes after dark, a distillery two hours inland and a river that takes one raft at a time.

  1. 01Jamaica Dunn’s River Falls Party Cruise with SnorkelingEntry is timed and the cruise-ship mornings fill first. With ships in, the early climbs are gone before breakfast.
  2. 02Luminous Lagoon Night Tour from Montego BayThe boats only go after sunset, and the glow reads best on a dark night. A full moon washes it out completely.
  3. 03Jamaica Martha Brae Bamboo Rafting with Bus TransportationEach raft carries one captain and one couple, so the river moves at the speed of the fleet. Morning departures go first.
  4. 04YS Falls, Black River Safari, Appleton Rum Tour OR Pelican Bar (Choose Up to 3)The estate sits deep in the Nassau Valley, two hours off the coast, so every visit runs as a full-day tour on a fixed departure.
When it rains

The Jamaican north coast takes an hour of rain most afternoons. Plan the roof.

Showers here arrive fast, empty out and leave, usually between two and four. Nothing on the water runs through one, and nothing on a river bank is any fun in it. The answer is an hour indoors: a great house, a rum estate, the craft markets, or a table with a view of the weather.

Bottled and roasted

Appleton rum out of the Nassau Valley, coffee off the Blue Mountains.

Two Jamaican exports are each worth a day of a holiday. The rum is a two-hour drive into cane country; the coffee is a climb out of Kingston into cloud. Both end with you tasting the thing where it is made.
